Series: Avatar: The Last Airbender
AU info: Zuko is a girl, but otherwise the story remains largely the same. Her gender has an impact of some of her relationships:
Mai - Although they are close friends, their relationship was never romantic. Zuko grew enamored with her when they were children, but she didn't realize the crush until her sister Azula made a few teasing remarks about it. She never acted on it, instead burying the feeling because she was sure that her father would disapprove of it, like he disapproved of everything else she did. While she was always uncertain as to whether she could care about another girl the same as she was meant to care about boys, she knew that two girls could not continue the royal line, which was important to her father. Mai remained her childhood friend and, after her return to the Fire Nation, her confidant. Their status as close friends is still enough for Mai to seek out Zuko at the Boiling Rock and demand an explanation for her betrayal, and for her to turn against Azula to save Zuko.

Iroh - By the time the Avatar resurfaces, their relationship is much the same as the male Zuko's relationship with his Uncle. However, at the beginning of Zuko's banishment, her uncle did not know her very well and had more "traditional" views about how young women should behave and how they should be treated. Over time he came to realize that his brash and stubborn niece neither fit into this idea, nor did she appreciate attempts to coddle her. He began to get to know her for who she was, and came to treat her more like his late son than how he always thought he might have treated a daughter. There do remain some differences, but only slight ones. For example, Iroh would never expect Zuko to agree with remarks about "pretty girls," or invite her to join him in hot springs.

Jin - In canon, Jin is a girl in Ba Sing Se who develops a crush on Zuko while he is working at the tea shop. In this reality, Jin is a boy. Zuko's uncle accepts for her when Jin asks her out. She enjoys the evening in spite of herself, but she does not reciprocate his kiss at the end of it, feeling only a platonic attraction to him.

Her relationships with Team Avatar remain unchanged, although the jabs about Katara being her "girlfriend" are never made.

Summary:
History
Zuko is the first born daughter of Ursa and Fire Lord Ozai. She was initially suspected not to have any bending at all, and even after she was determined to have the ability, she was soon overshadowed by her younger sister Azula, a firebending prodigy. Azula was favored over Zuko for as far back as she can remember, her father outright saying that Azula was "born lucky," while Zuko was "lucky to be born." The two sisters got along well enough when they were very young, reenacting plays together during their family's vacations to Ember Island, and Zuko recalls this as the only time her family was "actually happy."

Azula being the obvious favorite of nearly everyone and especially their father, and Zuko being favored by their mother, it did not take long for a rift to form between the two siblings. Zuko was almost relieved to attend the Royal Fire Academy for Girls, but her hopes for it were dashed as she found it difficult to make friends. Although she earnestly wanted to get along with the other girls, her sensitivity and quick temper did not make for a good first impression. By contrast, when Azula began attending the school two years later, she made friends almost instantly. Zuko befriended Mai only after her sister, when Azula began inviting the other girl to the palace.

When Zuko was eleven, her cousin Lu Ten was killed in battle, leaving her Uncle Iroh childless and leading her father to urge then Fire Lord Azulon to revoke Iroh's birthright. Azula later told Zuko that a furious Azulon had declared that Ozai must know Iroh's pain by killing his own first-born child. Zuko denounced her as a liar, but later that night her mother came to bid her farewell. In the morning, she was gone, and Azulon had passed away. Ozai was pronounced the new Fire Lord, according to his dying wish.

With her mother's disappearance, Zuko lost her greatest source of comfort and support, and had to look to her remaining parent for affection. Although Ozai still obviously favored Azula, Zuko had become the crown princess, and she strove to gain her father's approval as his heir. When she was thirteen, Zuko persuaded her Uncle Iroh to let her into a war meeting. Against her uncle's advice, she spoke out against a plan that would sacrifice the lives of many loyal Fire Nation soldiers. Offended by her outburst, her father demanded she fight an Agni Kai. Zuko accepted, believing she would be fighting the general whose plan it was, but she was dismayed to find her own father as her opponent. She refused to fight, and for this show of cowardice and disrespect, her father badly scarred and banished her.

For the next three years, Zuko sailed the world in search of the Avatar, whose capture was the only accomplishment for which her father would allow her to return home. She was accompanied by her uncle, although she would not truly appreciate his support until later.

At last the Avatar surfaced at the South Pole, and rekindled Zuko's hope of actually being able to gain her father's acceptance. Her chase began in earnest, and she tracked Aang and his friends as they made their way north. After butting heads several times with Fire Nation Admiral Zhao, the admiral appropriated her crew and attempted to have her killed. Escaping only narrowly, Zuko stowed away on board Zhao's ship with Iroh's help, accompanying the fleet to the North Pole. There, Zuko snuck past the Water Tribe defenses and captured Aang, only to find herself with nowhere to go. Aang was rescued by his friends, and Zuko escaped from them to encounter Admiral Zhao. Furious at the attempt on her life, Zuko fought him, but when the angry Ocean Spirit grabbed Zhao, Zuko still offered him her hand.

Zuko and Iroh escaped on a makeshift raft and drifted until reaching one of the Fire Nation colonies three weeks later. There, Azula found them and attempted to capture them as traitors for their actions at the North Pole. Realizing her deceit just in time, Zuko and Iroh escaped and became fugitives. Penniless and in enemy territory, the two struggled to get by. Iroh kept a positive attitude, but Zuko felt a despair at her dwindling likelihood of ever capturing the Avatar. They parted ways for a time, but reunited in the midst of a confrontation between Azula and Team Avatar. Afterwards, they soon found themselves joining the stream of Earth Kingdom refugees headed to Ba Sing Se.

Once in the city, Iroh found them jobs as tea-servers, and from the start seemed optimistic about starting fresh, but Zuko remained frustrated with the situation. She wanted her old life back, and hated the idea that she might have to settle for a quiet life in the Earth Kingdom, living under a false identity so far from the princess she felt she was meant to be.

Zuko then discovered that the Avatar was in Ba Sing Se, and in search of his bison. She was able to infiltrate the Dai Li's secret headquarters and beat Aang to where Appa was being held, but was confronted by Iroh. Iroh spoke passionately with her, trying to make her realize that the hunt for the Avatar was something imposed on her by her father, and that she could and should make her own decisions about her future. Instead of capturing Appa for herself, Zuko freed the bison, although the decision so conflicted with her own self-image that she fell ill.

When she recovered, Zuko had a brief bout of optimism, cut short when Azula set a trap for them. Zuko was captured and imprisoned together with Katara. Aang and Iroh showed up to rescue them, and Azula arrived shortly afterwards in pursuit of Aang. Iroh tried to convince Zuko to make the right choice, but Azula dangled before her again the chance to return home and earn her father's love. This time, Zuko chose to side with her sister, and together they nearly killed Aang.

Zuko felt uneasy with her decision afterwards, both because she had betrayed Iroh and because she had not actually captured the Avatar as instructed. Back in the Fire Nation, both she and Azula were welcomed home as heroes, and her father praised her defeat of the Avatar, although it was Azula who struck the final blow. She was again able to enjoy the privileges of royalty, to have her father's unprecedented approval, and to reaffirm her childhood friendship with Mai. But in spite of having everything she thought she had wanted, Zuko still felt conflicted. At first, she thought this was because of the gnawing suspicion that Aang was still alive, and so she hired an assassin to kill him. If anything, her conflicted feelings only grew stronger, and though she realized that it was herself she was angry with, she didn't understand why.

Then, she was summoned to participate in a war meeting. Instead of being a repeat of the fateful meeting that resulted in her banishment, Zuko held her tongue and acted as "the perfect princess." However, she realized afterwards that she had not acted as herself. This led her to the decision to leave the palace and join the Avatar. Leaving a note for Mai, she confronted her father so that she could finally speak her mind. She told him that he had been a terrible father and that the Fire Nation itself was wrong for pursuing war. After the confrontation, she attempted to free Iroh from prison, only to find that her uncle had broken himself out.

Zuko met up with Team Avatar, but struggled to earn their trust. Although Aang desperately needed a firebending teacher, Zuko's past actions made them all resentful towards her. It was only after her efforts to save them from the assassin she had unleashed that they agreed to give her a chance. She proved herself a dependable and valuable member of the group in a series of "life-changing field trips," first with Aang, then Sokka, and finally Katara. Her field trip with Toph was sadly a disappointment to both of them.

At the end of the summer, Zuko and the others prepared for the arrival of Sozen's Comet, when the Fire Nation intended to finish the war once and for all. When Aang vanished just before the battle, Zuko took charge of Team Avatar and, failing to find Aang, instead took them to the camp of the White Lotus where her uncle was. There, she reconciled with Iroh, and the group made plans together. Zuko and Katara went together to the Fire Nation capital to face Azula. Zuko was wounded in the fight while protecting Katara from a lightning blast, but she survived, and Katara was able to defeat Azula in her place. The other members of Team Avatar defeated Fire Lord Ozai and his airship fleet, and Zuko was soon to be crowned the new Fire Lord.

Personality
Zuko is characterized by her mother as "someone who keeps fighting, even though it's hard," and that has continued as one of her defining traits. Her life has been a constant struggle to prove her own worth and to come to her own understanding of right and wrong. Zuko will pursue a goal with passionate determination regardless of how hopeless or impossible it might seem, and she is willing to use extreme methods to achieve it. Consequently she is stubborn and difficult to dissuade once she has set her mind on something. In the past, she would also adamantly refuse aid, believing that a strong person needed to do things on her own. She has come to realize that accepting help does not make a person weak, although she can still be reluctant about it in certain situations.

She is hot-headed and reactive, and tends to run headlong into situations without thinking through an exit plan. Iroh's counsel and her experiences with Team Avatar have curbed her rash behavior, but she can be goaded into it. She has proven herself clever in coming up with solutions to immediate obstacles or using situations to her temporary advantage, but has difficulty planning for the long-term.

She struggles with a low self-esteem, first built up by years of being the unwanted daughter and now maintained by the guilt she feels over her mistakes. Her greatest fear is that she will one day slip down the wrong path again, and become like her father. These concerns make her easily the most serious-minded of the group, and can also make her sensitive and defensive about perceived insults. Despite her determination, she is often pessimistic, expecting to have to struggle through situations rather than reach her goal with ease. Her good moods are somewhat rare, as is any humor beyond sarcasm, although both can be coaxed out of her by people she cares about.

Despite appearances, she has a compassionate heart. This first showed itself as a love for her people and a refusal to sacrifice them in war, and is also shown when she places the lives of her uncle and her crew over her goal of capturing the Avatar. During her time as a fugitive in the Earth Kingdom, she further came to feel a sympathy for a people she had once seen as her enemy. Unlike her ruthless father and sister, Zuko is someone who will defend the weak and show mercy to her enemies.

The experiences of her upbringing and banishment provided her with few opportunities to interact normally with people, especially people her own age, and have left her socially awkward. She feels more at ease giving orders or discussing battle plans than carrying on a casual conversation. Although known for her loud outbursts, she becomes taciturn when conversing with strangers or makes awkward non sequiturs. She's improved somewhat while part of Team Avatar, but still frequently falls back on things her uncle would say. Very much unlike her sister, she doesn't read people very well, and expects their reactions to be similar to her own if she were in their position.

Powers:
Firebending - The ability to create and manipulate fire. Although Zuko does not possess the effortless skill of her father, uncle, or sister, she has still achieved a significant level of mastery by the end of the war. Only the most advanced techniques such as lightning generation are beyond her, and she is the only character to have demonstrated the ability to firebend through weapons, using it in conjunction with her dual swords. I want to say that the basics of firebending--producing quick fire blasts through kicks and punches--would be an always-on ability, although Zuko would tire more quickly than in her own world. More advanced abilities like sustained fire streams, fire walls, or lightning redirection would be subject to the standard power limitation. Additionally, as firebending is dependent on the sun, her ability would be weaker during the cloudy "night" cycle, and completely absent should anything like an eclipse happen.

Dual Dao Swords - Although she struggled to master firebending, Zuko seems to have a natural talent with swords. She trained with Master Piandao while still in the Fire Nation, and she is shown from the start to wield them with ease, as if they were extensions of her own body.

Unarmed Combat - While again not as skilled as her sister, Zuko is still well above average, and capable of evading or even disarming other opponents. Many firebending forms translate well to non-bending attacks.

Stealth - Zuko can conceal herself when she needs to, as shown when she infiltrates both a heavily-guarded Fire Nation fortress and the Dai Li headquarters without being detected.

Entry: Zuko will attempt to reach the Bastion on her own, but she's still recovering from her battle with Azula, so she'll probably be needing some help there.
